Disclosure Document
Dear Parents, Welcome to a new school year at Fox Hills Elementary. I’m looking forward to working with your children in Fifth Grade. My goal this year is to help your children establish good learning habits. I want to help them see that mistakes are not failures, but learning experiences. And we will celebrate their achievements as well. I will be firm enough that they feel secure in the class. I will encourage and support them as individuals with feelings, ideas, and desires that are worthy of respect and consideration. I want to provide an intellectual environment in which they can be creative, experiment, investigate, and learn. |

WEBSITE
Our classroom website can be found at http://hatchingnewideas.weebly.com/
This website is for you as parents to find out what we are doing in our classroom. It is also used often by your students.
I try to update my website often. Please become familiar with our website. There are also websites that will help your student with practice on many of the things that we are studying.
VOLUNTEERING IN THE CLASSROOM
I GREATLY appreciate help in the classroom. Unfortunately, because of COVID, we cannot allow volunteers in the building at this time. If and when that policy changes, I will let you know.
PLANNERS
Your student will be writing down the main things they do each day. By participating in this activity, you student should realize that they are learning (once they learn something new, they forget they didn’t always know it), and will better remember the things I am trying to emphasize.
It is your child’s responsibility to have you sign the planner, but PLEASE look at your child’s planner, after recording their reading minutes, sign it each night. There is greater learning and follow through if parents are aware and interested in the child’s school day. Ask your child why he wrote what he did, and what he learned from the activity. If you have a short note or question for me, write it in the planner.
Record reading minutes daily on the calendar page, along with your signature Please record the weekend minutes there also. Students should read 30 minutes everyday. This includes weekends and holidays. Total weekly reading minutes will be checked on Mondays to add to the report card.
MATH
You can access the math book, homework pages, and other Go Math activities at www.thinkcentral.com
Grading and Homework
“Students who achieve A’s based on what they have already learned
are gaining daily practice in underachievement.”
-Linda Silverman
Grading in every subject will follow Proficiency Based Learning outlined by the district.
INDEPENDENT READING
Students should read 30 minutes every night. This includes weekends and holidays. Record reading minutes daily on the monthly calendar in the planner where you sign your initials. Total weekly reading minutes will be checked on Mondays to add to their report card.
Discipline
It is important that our classroom atmosphere is one that is comfortable, happy and conducive to learning. Good citizenship is vital to the success of our class. The children will be expected to show kindness to each other and to respect themselves, their classmates, and their teacher. Positive behavior will be reinforced and rewarded. Disruptive behavior or behavior that is unsafe to the children will not be tolerated.
Students are expected to follow the school-wide behavior management program. In our class, if there is a problem with a student’s behavior, I will give them a verbal suggestion that they change what they are doing. If they continue their behavior, they will be asked to step away and fill out a stop and go. If a student is consistently disruptive, parents will be contacted and a joint decision will be made on what action to take.
Attendance
Our class follows the district guidelines for attendance. Students need to and are expected to attend school regularly, be on time, and be prepared to learn. Fifth grade is like a ladder where every day we climb a little bit higher with the instruction, and even missing a single day can make it difficult to catch on the next day. We have amazing discussions and instruction that can’t be replicated. Please try to have your student attend EVERY DAY unless they are ill.
Online learners should be online EVERY DAY.
I will contact you when your child has missed three consecutive days of school. Would you please send a written excuse back to school when they return? Children are not to leave the school grounds during the day. If you need to check them out of school for any reason during the day, please go to the office and sign them out.
I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with your child. Please feel free to contact me for any questions, concerns, or frustrations you have so we can work on them together and give your child the best education possible.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Hatch
